Bittorrent Seeder Arrested

Another seeder was arrested for uploading. I'm so ashamed to be living in a place so monopolized by heartless capitalists that not one political party, politician or academic has been willing to stand up for us. Piracy has given us unprecedented computer literacy, made possible many cult/small fandoms, and given people access to movies or shows which would've been censored or died of obscurity. And frankly, the movies or shows which people wouldn't like to pay for after downloading wouldn't have attracted a paying audience in the first place. For one thing, I've bought more DVDs after I've got into the habit of downloading simply because I know of and have tasted more shows via this means.

Censorship in BBC Entertainment in Singapore

I had no idea BBC Entertainment cut Gwen's kiss with the girl in the second episode and the two kisses between Tosh and Mary. I'm glad I didn't subscribed to BBC Entertainment in my cable package – I've a niggling fear that it would just show the same heavily censored version for all Asian countries.

Fictional Brothers

I've stopped and started with this idea but never found the time to do a thorough research or flesh out my idea. So I thought I'd just write it down now or else I'll fuck up again at work (I've just sent an invitation email to 30-odd people with the subject line "Draft invitation email") because of my preoccupation with this.

The thought first struck me when watching Slumdog Millionaire because Salim and Jamal were quite a lot like Nathan and Peter (a pragmatic vs a dreamer) and also quite a lot like Dean and Sam. Then I went through a list of memorable brothers on film and TV: Lincoln and Michael (Prison Break), Del-boy and Rodney (Only Fools and Horses), Edward and Alphonse (Fullmetal Alchemist)...

It seems that more often than not the older brother acts as a sort of surrogate parent to the younger one rather than the competitor relationship that seems more common in real life. While it's very real for a close relationship to flourish between brothers who are orphaned or have parents who are so distant they might as well not be there, I cannot but wonder: Is it really so hard to write a supportive brotherly relationship without taking the parents away? Is it really so hard to write ordinary siblings at all?

Film & TV

Went to see Slumdog Millionaire at the cinema last night. It's quite different watching it on the big screen. I kept noticing how every shot was done beautifully and how the music was so perfect for the film, especially since I've already got the story when I first watched it on my computer.

Just downloaded Law and Order: UK out of curiosity. I didn't know Ben Daniels is in it. Does that mean now I have one more show to download?

With the news coming in about what shows are renewed and what shows are cancelled, I can't help but wonder what shows ABC will be left with next season. I'm still bitter they cancelled Pushing Daisies. And I don't understand why CW hasn't renewed Reaper. I may have to join in the sock campaign after all.

The Stepfather

After enduring the boring "The Perfect Blue" and "The Walk", I'm glad I still gave "The Stepfather" a chance because it turned out to be quite a gripping drama. I don't like the twist at the end but it's still a good mini-series on the whole. I just hope Philip Glenister will have more luck in the future after the crapfest that is Demons.

Wilson/House & My Bloody Valentine

How great it is to see Wilson touching House as the image on TV.com's front page!

Wilson/House on TV.com front page

Finally watched My Blood Valentine (3-D)! It's my first 3-D movie so it's worth every dollar of the ticket :) It's amazing how distracting the stones on the road, the trees in the woods, and even the pillars of the bridge or the rooms can be just because it's 3-D~ Human faces or bodies just don't stand out as much unless it's a big close-up (oh, merely Jensen's pretty face in close-up is already worth the price for 3-D~) or if the person's got beautiful long, wavy hair.

The 10-year-ago part is rather crap. Actually, the dialogues from there right up to the diner scene really were unbearably crap, and I just couldn't stop laughing at the dark bra under the white tee. But I really like what came later. I like that the naked girl in the motel has nice real tits and I like that she has a strong personality even though it's probably only used as a ontrived reason for her prolonged nakedness. I agree that main story (the identity of the killer) is rather weak but I don't really care when there's a chance to see Jensen tall (which was esp. highlighted by the mine tunnels), handsome and badass!

Being Human

Just 10 minutes in and I'm loving this ep so much I want to squeeeal. I wish I could turn all my friends into Being Human fans but Bibliophile ([info]gryffinclaw) does this intro thing much better than I could.

Apparitions

Four reasons why I love Apparitions:

  • Joe Ahearne and his brilliance in making us look hard at what is morally right and wrong in thrilling, intriguing stories. He's also not afraid to take on issues like rape and abortion although the lead is a priest.
  • Martin Shaw as the exorcist priest who manages to be cool AND priestly while kicking ass
  • The casting of black and Asian actors in the supporting characteres - alright they may be tokens but they're strong in their own right and they are there every ep.
  • Last but not least, Joe Ahearne is a wonderful director and the whole series is beautifully shot, which considering the FX that's maligning other British series like Merlin and Demons is not a small feat.

I hope it gets commissioned for another series.
